Hello, Members:

I hope this message finds you well.

Your credit union strives to give the best possible service to you.  That is why I would like to talk to you about a very important financial fitness topic that could affect you and your loved ones:  Reclamations.

If a member receives payment from a federal or state government agency (either by check or direct deposit), and the funds received from this payment could be deposited into your account, then you need to know about reclamations.

By definition, reclamation means reasserting a right or the process of claiming something back.

In the case of a member receiving payment from a government agency which could be deposited into your account, these funds are normally available for withdrawal immediately. However, a problem arises when the payee of these funds passes away and payments continue to be deposited into your account after the payee’s death.

If withdrawals are made from your account against funds that were deposited after the payee’s passing and the credit union is unaware the payee has passed, the government agency will reclaim these funds and you could be held liable for any of these funds that were withdrawn.

To avoid reclamation issues with government agencies, please do the following:

  1. Contact the government agency that originated the payment and make them aware of the payee’s date of death.
  2. Contact the credit union and make us aware of the payee’s date of death.
  3. Send a death certificate to both the government agency and the credit union.  Once we receive a copy of the certificate, we will change the vesting on your membership.

A final note to remember – that will help you minimize account fraud – is you must contact the credit union when your contact information has changed. As a reminder we will be asking you periodically if your address and/or telephone number have changed.
